"Throughout the month of July, I served as an intern for the Amnesty International section in Dakar, Senegal. During this time, I had the opportunity to learn about the current challenges to human rights facing the people of Senegal and to participate in a variety of activities relating to current campaigns.

These activities included taking part in a meeting of civil society members and government officials to discuss legislation that would expand the rights of members of the press ; attending an Amnesty press conference and meeting with Senegalese senators to bring awareness to the human rights abuses of the Gambian government ; and attended a meeting to discuss human rights violations by the Senegalese police.

All the while conducting my own research on the alleged human rights violations committed by mining companies in the Kedougou region of Senegal. It was a wonderful and busy month !« Français »Tout au long du mois de Juillet, j’ai servi en tant que stagiaire à la Section sénégalaise d’Amnesty International à Dakar. Pendant cette période, j’ai eu l’occasion d’en apprendre davantage sur les défis actuels en matière de droits humains au Sénégal et de participer à une variété d’activités relatives aux campagnes en cours.

Ces activités comprenaient la participation à une réunion des membres de la société civile et des responsables gouvernementaux pour discuter de la législation devant permettre d’élargir les droits des acteurs de la presse. J’ai aussi assisté à une conférence de presse d’Amnesty à l’occasion de la Journée d’action sur la Gambie et à une rencontre avec des sénateurs Sénégalais afin de sensibiliser sur les atteintes aux droits humains dans ce pays.

Nous avons pu avoir des entretiens avec des parents de victimes de brutalités policières. Pendant tout ce temps j’ai mené mes propres recherches documentaires sur les supposés violations des droits humains dont seraient responsables les sociétés minières dans la région de Kédougou au Sénégal. Ce fut un mois merveilleux et bien rempli !"
